Change Your Body, Change Your Mind

November 13,2012

A friend directed me to this neat little article on body postures.

The article cites research that was performed by the Kellogg School of Management on how our body posture affects our mood. Our bodies are marvelous resources for helping us get out of our heads, and simply changing your body posture can “trick” your brain into feeling something different from what you were originally thinking. Try out each of their five suggested body postures, and notice how your mood changes:

I’d like to add another one to the list: Smile. I am always amazed by how much of an impact putting a smile on your face can have on your mental well-being. Regardless of your mood before the smile, it is almost impossible not to feel some sense of pleasure or relief when smiling. I don’t advocate ignoring your other feelings, or forcing yourself to smile, but it can be a fun little experiment to try when you are feeling neutral or just a little blue.
