“What do you want to do tonight?”

“Whatever you want to do is fine with me.”

“I don’t care, honestly, you can pick.”

If you have ever been in a relationship, this conversation feels all too familiar.

You may have had it about a different topic – what to have for dinner, which curtains to buy, which TV show to watch, where to walk the dog…

There are so many choices we have to make on a daily basis – individually and as a couple – that many of us get decision fatigue.

The funny thing is that most of these choices aren’t actually that important. There are no consequences for choosing blue kitchen towels over white ones. But we can get so frustrated by our mutual indecision that we may end up getting irritated with each other! Is there anything more annoying than getting into a squabble over something as insignificant as sushi or pizza for dinner?

One way to stop going in circles with each other is to trade off being executive decision maker. Switch roles weekly (or even daily if you want!). When it’s your turn to be in charge, you have to make the final call on decisions that involve the two of you.

I love suggesting this game to the couples I work with because it’s so simple. It can even end up being quite fun! You can really get into your role of executive decision maker, and relish in getting to take the back seat when your partner is in charge.

Have fun!
