Two interesting tidbits of sexual technology news for you today…

An orgasm spray for women

Pharmaceutical company Trimel is currently testing a testosterone nasal spray for women. The drug, Tefina, is targeted towards women who suffer from Female Orgasmic Disorder, and claims to increase not only the likelihood of orgasming, but the experience of pleasure during sex as well.

In recent studies, Trimel gave dosages of Tefina to over 250 women. After about three months of usage, the women on Tefina reported a higher frequency of orgasms than a control group. The women also reported having no side effects whatsoever. I couldn’t find specific results about levels of pleasure.

Drug companies have been trying out testosterone products for women for a while now. Testosterone has been linked to sex drive in men, and the hope has been that it will lead to an increase in sex drive for women too.

While I’m really glad to see female arousal and orgasm getting more attention from the medical field, I also know from professional experience as a sex therapist that female desire is too complex an issue to be solved by a pharmaceutical product. I’m all for doing whatever is necessary to help women reach orgasm more reliably, but it’s important to pay some attention to the other aspects of female desire. You might get a slightly higher sex drive from a testosterone nasal spray, but the drug won’t help you feel more comfortable asking for what you like during sex. It won’t relieve the exhaustion that usually prevents you from having more frequent sex. It won’t make your partner more invested in pleasing you.

3-D printed dildos

A new company called Dildo Generator recently launched a website that allows you to easily design your own sex toys. You can use the interface to determine the width, length, curve, bendability, and color of your new toy. I played around with the tool myself, and it’s incredibly easy to use. The company doesn’t provide 3-D printing services, but will direct you to some resources for getting your product printed. I’m not sure many women would know the exact dimensions they desire in a sex toy, but it’s exciting to see how emerging 3-D technology will continue to shape the future of the sex toy industry.
